Article Review Since quite a while, it was normal for organization excutives to take next to zero obligation and dynamic help in Germany however we are presently seeing a change since the executive of Siemens, Gerhard Cromme, left Germany's corporate administration bonus after an organization outrage. This change includes organization heads being increasingly wary and they presently understand that they are accountable. The time has now changed and issues, for example, the pay off instance of Siemens, the biggest European designing gathering, can no longer stay covered up. The organization heads currently must be progressively answerable for their activities as a result of harsh new guidelines in Germany, the expanding universal financial specialist network and pivotal review done by U.S controllers of organizations that have U.S protections listings. The organizations should be increasingly cautious in their dealings due to the exceptionally solid check is presently stayed with over the exchanges an d different issues and furthermore in light of the fact that the outcomes are cruel. The easygoing connections between the higher and lower levels of the board in an association should be done. The solid beware of organizations and globalization is liable for the expansion in such embarrassments as these exercises can no longer remain private. When something like the pay off instance of Siemens occurs, the word spreads and it truly ruins the company’s picture before the whole world. The harm that this causes is then difficult to cover, along these lines the organizations presently endeavor hard to stay away from such circumstances. The entire world presently realizes that Siemens offered roughly $2 billion so as to pay off different organizations into giving them different agreements everywhere throughout the world. Different cases incorporate the instance of Deutsche Telekom of following private calls to discover who was parting with data in regards to their inner issues, Volk swagen’s utilization of whores and get-aways to win work pioneers into their board.Strong examination will be done against the Siemens as this is considered as the biggest case ever by Joshua Hochberg, a previous head of the misrepresentation segment at the U.S. Division of Justice and one of the lead examiners into the breakdown of the vitality firm Enron after its scandal. The pattern of easygoing connections between the more elevated levels and brings down degrees of an organization began after the Second World War. A Summer of Learning

A Summer of Learning Nat, to hack you need to understand systems better than the sys admins, networks better than the IT department and operating systems better than the people who wrote them Dan T. 85 (my boss) I chuckled and agreed but little did I know what I was getting myself into. Eight weeks ago I landed in Austin, Texas to start an internship at Lumension (they sell enterprise level security software, think Symantec McAfee). The job description was to do some penetration testing with some typical hacking tools to make a guide for sales engineers but what I found was a 10 week introduction to the software security world. What that meant is reading, lots of reading. And it has easily been one of my favorite summers to date. Computer security is something they touch upon a little bit in classes but its something you really cant delve into until junior year. The internship was pitched to me as a better class than any school could offer and its been so much more. There have been three aspects to the work to date. Script Kiddie 101 The primary portion of this internship was to do quite a bit of work with Metasploit, a hacking framework that makes exploiting an unpatched system as easy as 4 commands. This portion of the internship included a lot of learning about the simple tools put out by the powerful hackers who do this for a living. Script Kiddies are called so because of how simple these tools make it to mess around on the internet and it was a wonderful experience to see what was out there in an environment where I could ask people detailed questions about their inner workings. Learning About The Backbone of Software Theres a good reason that its hard to take software security classes before junior year and its exactly due to the above quote. A lot of my time at Lumension has been spent learning about different systems and a typical learning session will go like this. Me: *Hmm, I wonder how Windows handles threads.* Me: Hey Dan, how does Windows handle threads? Dan: *20-30 minute speech on the intricacy of Windows* and read this book to learn more. Me: Uhh, errr, okay. *spend a few hours getting caught up* Its been drinking from an entirely different firehose and I absolutely love it. Writing Test Tools The last week and a half has been writing test tools for quality assurance and its been wonderful to get back to coding. Burning the midnight(uhh the 8:30-5:00) fuel listening to NPRs Car Talk Pop Culture Happy Hour, its been great to get back to the roots of 6-3. Two weeks to go! Edit: Im going to take the next week off so that I can finish my last week in Austin relaxed. Ill be back on the 12th from Kansas!

Free An Analysis of Wise Blood Essay

Free An Analysis of Wise Blood Essay An Analysis of Wise Blood I am an enthusiastic believer of OConners beautiful, unique, harrowing, surreal and poetic Southern Gothic book Wise blood It is a novel that is small in length but large in content, ideas, eccentricities and character. Despite the huge focus on evangelism, spirituality and in spite of shedding a huge spotlight on eccentrics, outcasts, the abnormal and grotesque, it somehow introduces and depicts characters that have the same desires as everyone else; the need to receive love, affection, acceptance and recognition for who they are and their achievements. A great gothic tale is one that is about psychology and is riddled with deep suspense, grand places and remarkable characters that develop the frisson of darkness and danger. OConner delivers the book with a very powerful undercurrent of deep desire of acceptance and understanding. The Southern Gothic style has always had the unusual effect of making the hair on the back of the readers neck stand up, and OConner manages to strike all he right cords through her literary ingenuity to ensure that the nature and character of the 20th century South is appropriately captured. However, several elements of the book are lacking such as the use of her prose style in terms of discussing sensitive topics such as gender. The period the book was written in was a time characterized by women being viewed as highly conservative and considered their status in society in high regard. OConners depiction of the characters in Wise blood is profoundly unfeminine, unemotional, highly unladylike but deadly clinical, more so after considering the heavy gender stereotyping and perceptions of the time. In the middle of the twentieth century, the masculine prose style followed the laconic models of such renowned writers as Hemingway and the tough-boiled discipline of pulp fiction. The feminine style was however correspondingly much softer. {t_essay_order} A brutal irony is introduced through her writing with a slam-bag humor that is both entertaining but somehow distasteful and balefully direct. The use of the N word in referring to the black American race was particularly popular in the gothic literary materials written in that period; however, this shows how the some would consider her a racist in the modern era. Although her technique of telling of the story is morally absolute, she manages to capture the character of the grotesque gothic era through the use of the direct sentences that manages to raise outrage and indignation in the readers until they is able to immerse themselves completely in the ignorable disasters that was the South. The principal character and reluctant saint, Hazel Motes, is one of the most improbable dullards ever to grace the covers of a Gothic genre of American novels. He is undoubtedly the king of the anti-social characters in the book, leading the way in explaining the prevalent and deep rooted nature of the 1950s south. Hazel Motes is so repulsive that it is hard to even like his character, but the intrigue that surrounds his journey is so deep that one cannot help to keep reading in order to find out the final destination of his endeavors and crusade against God. There is no doubt that some of his behaviors are completely insane and utterly moronic, one more so than the next; he decides to blind himself with lime in his quest to completely absolve of the ills of society. He retorts to what some would consider completely overreacting to a situation: finding that blinding himself the only logical and available solution to the fact that a mean-spirited police officer has pushed his unlicens ed vehicle off a cliff. Clearly, this reaction does not make any sense in terms of the severalty of the action and is a clear misunderstanding of what the author was trying to relay about Motes. Perhaps some of the bewilderment about the main characters exploits arises from the mystified and sometimes dark nature of the Southerners. A reader who might approach the book as though it is a part of naturalistic fiction is bound to have their expectations greatly confounded. Wise blood is much closer to the allegory of religion than it is to the naturalistic fictional genre. It is impossible to analyze the work of OConner without at least viewing her book in comparison with other literary heavy weights of her era. The southern gothic style, a subgenre of the Gothic literary technique, was a popular and unique style in American literature. This style utilizes the tools of dark tales, supernatural events and irony to guide the plot. This style is utilized in the plot not for the purpose of suspense, but for the exploration of the social issues as well as the cultural and religious character of the American South. The fact that the author was a Southerner, and the nature and grotesqueness of her characters adds fuel to the perception that she was writing in a southern gothic style. OConner is no doubt one of the most startling women to come out of those parts, with her mode of fiction writing seldom challenged by critics. She proved to be an important and lasting contributor to the grotesque literary influences of southern decadences.

Whats a Good SAT Score for Your College

What's a Good SAT Score for Your College SAT / ACT Prep Online Guides and Tips You’ve thought about your dream colleges and are wondering what SAT score will get you accepted. While there is not one number that will guarantee you a spot in the freshmen class, there is a range that will give you the best chance of admission. What is it? I'll answer that and more in this article. Colleges’ SAT Score Range and What They Mean for You To figure out what score you should aim for, you should look at colleges’ SAT score range. The score range represents the scores that admitted students received.Typically, colleges provide you with scores from the most recent applicant pool. The Score Range will be given to you in one of two ways: 25th/75th percentile or average SAT.The 25th percentile SAT score means 25% of admitted freshmen scored at or below that number (or 75% of admits scored higher). The 75th percentile SAT score means 75% of admitted students scored at or below that number (or 25% of admits scored higher). The average SAT is simply the average of all admitted students’ SAT scores. The score ranges will help you understand what kind of score you need to be a competitive applicant to that university, since after looking at it, you'll know what SAT scores admitted students received. Before figuring out exactly what score you should aim for, you need to figure out what schools you hope to attend. Make a List of Target Schools If you haven't done so already, create a list of your dream colleges. This list should not include your safety schools.A safety school is a college that you're almost certain you can get into with the SAT score and GPA you have now. This list should include the more selective colleges that you hope to attend. You should exclude the safety schools because you want to plan your target SAT score for the schools with the highest admissions standards. If you meet or exceed the admissions standards for the more selective schools, you will almost certainly be admitted to your safety schools.Once you think you've identified those more selective colleges, draw a table with 3 columns with the following titles: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score Fill in your target schools under school name as I did below: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley Yale University Under the 25th percentile or average SAT, you'll put either the 25th percentile or average SAT score for that school. As I said before, schools will only provide you with one or the other; whichever they give you, writethat number in the middle column. Under 75th percentile / target score, you put the school’s 75th percentile score (if they provide it). For schools that only give average SAT, you'll be calculating a unique target score. I'll explain how to calculate it later on in the article. How to Find the SAT Score Ranges Now that you have your list finding those schools’ SAT score ranges is very easy. Simply search â€Å"[College Name] average SAT† or â€Å"[College Name] SAT 25th/75th percentile† in Google. That will most likely lead you to what is known as the Freshman Admit Profile for your target school. If you are unable to find a Freshman Admit Profile for your school of choice, check out our database of college admission requirements. There you'll find the admissions criteria for almost every college in the country. Use the Command + F function on your keyboard to search for your target school. Here is a screenshot from Yale’s admission site: Yale provided the 25th/75th percentile SAT score for their admits on their admissions website. To figure out the 25th percentile composite SAT score if you took the SAT or are taking it this fall, simply add the 3 lower numbers together (which each separately represent the 25th percentile SAT score for the section): 710 + 710 + 720 = 2140 To approximate the 25th percentile composite SAT score if you are taking the new SAT in spring 2016 (which is out of 1600), you need to first average the Verbal and Writing sections (since on the new SAT they are combined into one section out of 800): (710 + 720) / 2 = 715 And then add that number to the 25th percentile SAT score for Math: 715 + 710 = 1425, rounds to 1430 (the SAT is scored in units of 10) Do the same math with the higher numbers (75th percentile score) to figure out the composite 75th percentile SAT score. NOTE: some schools may call it the middle 50% scores, but the 2 numbers they provide are the 25th and 75th percentile scores. Some schools call it the middle 50% since the scores between the 25th and 75th percentile represent the middle 50% of SAT scores of admitted freshmen. Add this new information that you found (the 25th percentile composite SAT score) to your chart. (NOTE: I have completed this for a student taking the new SAT in Spring 2016 forward): School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley Yale University 1430 1590 While some schools provide you with the 25th/75th percentile, other schools will provide you with only one number, the average SAT score for admitted freshmen (which UC Berkeley’s does in their Freshman Admit Profile below): As I said before, this is simply the average of all of the SAT scores for admitted freshmen. Since it is an average, you can't know exactly how many students scored above and below it, but presumably about 50% scored above and 50% scored below. If you took or are taking the SAT this fall, use the Math, Critical Reading, and Writing scores. Simply add them together to figure out the average composite SAT score. 686 + 710 + 698 = 2094, rounds to 2090 (as I noted before, the SAT is scored in units of 10) If you are taking the SAT in spring 2016 or later, use the Math score as is and then average the Critical Reading and Writing scores together (since on the new SAT they are combined into one section out of 800): (686 + 698) / 2 = 692 710 + 692 = 1402, rounds to 1400 Knowing this information, we'll writeit in the column for 25th Percentile or Average SAT, leave the 75th Percentile / Target Score blank for now for colleges that only provide Average SAT. I will explain what to fill in later on: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley 1400 Yale University 1430 1590 How to Calculate Target Score For schools that provide the 75th percentile, you should aim for a score at or above the 75th percentile. (That is why I had you list the 75th percentile in the same column as target score. The 75th percentile is your target score!) For those schools that just give you an average composite SAT (such as UC Berkeley), I would aim for a score 100 points above that score for the new SAT. For the old SAT, you will need to aim even higher (about 150 points above the average) since there are 3 sections instead of 2. For the best shot of admission to UC Berkeley if you are taking the new SAT in 2016, I would aim for 1500 out of 1600. If you took or are taking the current SAT, I would aim for 2240. You should fill in that number (the average SAT plus 100 points for the new SAT or the average SAT plus 150 points for the old SAT) to your chart under 75th percentile / Target score: School Name 25th Percentile or Average SAT 75th Percentile / Target Score UC Berkeley 1400 1500 Yale University 1430 1590 You may ask why you can’t aim for a lower score, closer to the 25th percentile or the average score. After all, a lot ofstudents are accepted with those scores. In writing this article, I'm assuming that you are a typical applicant and not a special applicant.Special applicants such as athletes, legacies, child of significant donors, or a unique talent (such as world-class opera singers or famous actors) are typically admitted with lower scores (25th percentile score). If you are not in that category, you'll want a higher SAT score to havethe best chance of being accepted. The higher your score, the better your chance of admission.Check out Brown University’s breakdown of admission below: If you look at the highest score (800), 22.8% of applicants who scored an 800 in Critical Reading were accepted to Brown, which is significantly higher than the overall Brown admissions rate 8.7%. You can see that as your score begins to decline (you get between 750 and 790 in Critical Reading) your chances of being accepted drop by 5.7% from 22.8% to 15.1%.The same principle holds true across all sections and the composite (which they did not provide data on). The lesson to take away from this data is the higher your score, the better your chance of being accepted. As you see from my chart above, the two â€Å"Target Scores† vary by 90points, so which should you aim for?Aim for the highest target score on your list. If you reach the highest target score, you'll have the best chance of admission at all of the universities on your list. If you got a 1590 and applied to Yale and UC Berkeley, you would have a great chance of being accepted to both. However, if you got a 1500 and applied to Yale, you would now fall short of the 75th percentile score and be in the middle 50% of admits scores. You still could be admitted, but your chances are not quite as good. Dissatisfaction of employees in organization Assignment

Dissatisfaction of employees in organization - Assignment Example However, every employee has certain expectations from the company for, which they deliver their services. An employee craves for variable returns for his/her services being rendered to the organisation. A dis-satisfied employee may face variable amount of problems, which may result in decline of the productivity of the employees that will drastically affect the overall performance of an organisation (Anderson, 2011). An in depth analysis provides a clearer picture of that presented the aspects of inequalities within the organisation. This aspect seemed to take a negative turn within the entire organisation. It was learned that all the employees who were working within the organisation were not treated in an equal manner. It has been affirmed form the case scenario that the employees who dedicatedly invested their time and effort in meeting up the business requirements were not given equal treatments, benefits and perks as compared to other employees. This created a dis-satisfaction among the employees, which affected the productivity of the organisation. According to the brief scenario, broader benefits comprised of different opportunities pertaining to learning of multiple languages. The other benefits included proper motivation, opportunities pertaining to receiving scholarships, different forms of training among other beneficial factors. On the other hand, the scenario was totally different. T he other bunch of employees who seem to work very hard for the sake of the organisation did not received any returns from the organisation’s end. It seemed that all of efforts were simply getting wasted as there was no one to recognise their hard work. And these aspects ultimately lead to dissatisfaction among the employees as they were not receiving any kind of benefits or motivational support. How does Oedipus Rex Exhibits Weakness of Character Essay

How does Oedipus Rex Exhibits Weakness of Character - Essay Example The play observed in the research begins with a plague in Thebes, the land of Oedipus. In response, he sent Creon, his brother-in-law to the oracle at the worshiping place for Apollo. Creon returned bearing the news that once the murderer of the former King Lauis had been banished, the plague will end. Then, the blind prophet named Teiresias was pursued by Oedipus for interrogation, but the prophet denied him of any answers. Oedipus threatened the blind prophet until he got the answer. Oedipus became furious when he was accused as the murderer of his father and marrying his mother that will lead to a blind life. When Oedipus went back to the palace, he saw Creon and charged him with treason. Luckily, Jocasta and the Chorus begged Oedipus for mercy. Creon was able to escape. Then, Jocasta comforted Oedipus as she guaranteed him that oracles do not work as she experienced the lies of the prophecy. According to her story, she and Laius gave their son to a shepherd to kill him using a pi n and prevent the prophecy of having their son committing the murder over his father. What really happened was the murder happened where three roads meet and five robbers were responsible for the crime that killed Laius. The story matched the memory of Oedipus so he called for the witness. Jocasta was surprised as Oedipus shared his story when he learned that he was not the son of the father he knew and he had killed a man at the crossing of three roads due to insult from his victim. (Sophocles 55). Afterwards, Polybus, the known father of Oedipus was reported to be dead. They rejoiced for a little bit as Jocasta had taken it as a proof to support her claims that oracles are worthless. The prophecy will not come true according to a messenger as Merope was not the real mother of Oedipus and he would not visit Corinth (Sophocles 95). The messenger started to reveal what he knew though the servant was the one who knew the whole truth regarding the baby who grew up to be Oedipus (Sophoc les 99). With that, Jocasta came to understand the whole truth and tried to stop Oedipus from knowing it. He did not stop from knowing the truth and got the answers from the old shepherd. He went back to the palace and saw Jocasta in a chamber hanging (Sophocles 77). In response, he took her brooch and blinded himself and set for an eternal exile. Before leaving the city, he left his children under the care of Creon while the Chorus lamented for the tragic fate that came upon their King. Oedipus had shown his strength and highness as he had shown from the start of the play. He was able to save Thebes from the sphinx and its curse by solving the riddles. Oedipus was depicted as strong and intelligent that made him a king quickly. He was also known for being wise as he can make good decisions that earned the trust of the people of Thebes (Ramphos 5). Slowly, the image projected by Oedipus changed as his fate came to his senses. He did not expect that a tragedy would approach him as he was all high and mighty being the king of Thebes. He was viewed as a savior and a hero who happened to free the people from curse. His downturn as a character was shown with his hasty decisions and actions when he got the first answer regarding the solution to the plague. It showed his swiftness in action, but that time depicted his weakness as he accused Creon of paying the blind prophet Teiresias for condemning Oedipus as the source of the plague. It seemed

Relationship Between Lennie And George Essay

Relationship Between Lennie And George Essay Analysing the relationship between George and Lennie in Steinbecks Of Mice and Men In the opening section of the novella, Steinbeck wishes to portray the relationship between George and Lennie as leader and follower. Steinbeck highlights that they walked in single file down the narrow path and when they came into the open, one stayed behind the other; which immediately indicates that George is dominant in this relationship, therefore Lennie is somewhat irresponsible, dependent and incapable of looking after himself. This image illustrates that George acts as a parental figure and Lennie is similar to a shy child hiding behind a father. Furthermore, in Chapter 2 this idea is developed when George also carries Lennies work card, knowing that Lennie would lose it if he was responsible for it Think Id let you carry your own work card?. This quote shows how George acts as a parental figure for Lennie; George must look after Lennies important possessions, as George knows that he will just lose them because of his simple-mindedness. The rhetorical question also shows Geor ges frustration with Lennies small mental capacity as he is always creating problems. Also, when we are first introduced to Lennie and George, the main physical differences between them are highlighted. Lennie is huge, shapeless of face and often dehumanized to be that of a bear. However, George on the other hand, is small, quick and thin with, restless eyes and slender arms. This description is a form of juxtaposition, as the two characters contrast in appearance. It would form an image in the readers minds of two characters that differ greatly, and could supposedly be the opposite of one another. I think the authors intentions of using of this language technique, would be to make a point of their differences and suggest that their personalities also greatly contradict each other. So this makes us read on to find out why we find these two opposing characters together in the story. Throughout the passage, Lennie is referred to as a bear, and a huge companion with dragging feet. This creates an image in the readers mind of a man who is giant-like in size and is supposedly clumsy and uncoordinated. The authors use of the animal Bear to compare Lennie to, symbolizes that he can be the dangerous, strong bear, or the cuddly teddy bear. It indicates that whilst Lennie is a big and strong man, he is also just a playful, childish boy who needs guidance. Steinbeck also metaphorically compares Lennie snorting into water like a horse; Lennies actions are similar to an animal, unlike humans who cup their hands to drink water. This emphasizes that he will act upon an animal instinct and his animal characteristics convey Lennies great strength that he is unaware of; this holds immense importance in the novel as it foreshadows the downfall of Lennie due to his powerful strength and animal instincts. Verbs and adverbs are chosen specifically to reflect Lennies and Georges attitudes and characteristics. Generally actions and descriptive words attached to Lennie show a lack of confidence and maturity, for example words such as dabbled and timidly displays Lennies hesitancy and unassertiveness, whilst George on the other hand has words adverbs such as sharply and gently which suggests that he is thinks a lot before all his actions. Overall the reader can deduce without any explanation required, that Lennie most likely needs supervision from George, and looks up to him as a role model because he admires his intelligence and general behaviour/demeanour. In the books dialogue, Steinbeck uses slang, colloquialism, and non-standard terms (aint, would of, brang, and so on) to convey an authentic sense of the characters. This casual dialect(shes a loo loo, Curleys got ants in his pants) helps recreate a particular time, place, and social background that make the book sound real as well as the characters more relatable. Whats more, is that the lack of standard English is constant throughout all speech, characters dont speak with more refinement to other specific characters. Even Lennie, though hes slow, isnt less able to communicate with words than others. This aspect equalizes the characters and gives them a lack of identity or purpose. Overall it addresses the theme of power and each characters lack of control over their own destiny. Readers may interpret these aspects negatively, because it is symbolic of the lack of importance or significance people had back in the contexts day. However, on the other hand you could interpret it as a goo d thing that all of society was equal, everyone had equal chances and people felt a good sense of community and belonging. Towards the end of chapter 6, as Lennies captors advance towards him, Steinbeck gives a brief description, using pathetic fallacy, of the landscape in which the story is unfolding; Already the sun had left the valley to go climbing up the slopes of the Gablian Mountains, and the hill tops were rosy in the sun. I believe Steinbecks desired intentions of using this specific technique, is to reflect that all hope of the American dream has been lost, due to the death of Curleys wife. The sun is the light, which represents hope and happiness, and the fact it has left the valley represents the reality of the situation; that Lennie has ruined any chance they once had of fulfilling the dream. The use of the word already in particular, depicts the idea that all hope vanished as soon as Lennie killed her; there was no way he could have made amends. This would make the reader feel sympathy/pity for Lennie, as they have grown attached to his character throughout the book, and they know the death was unintentional. Also, embedded frequently throughout the book, is the use of structural motifs. In particular, the recurring element of the American Dream, and its dismal achievability, is used to signify the relationship between Lennie and George. It exemplifies one of the reasons why we find the two characters together; their differences are made apparent yet they both share and hold onto this strong sense of longing for this scenario, no matter how out of reach it is. Additionally, each time George repeats this dream to Lennie, his intonation and demeanor in which he says it, reflects its current state of achievability. For example, in chapter one, where Lennie and George have no job and no comfortable sanctuary, George is reluctant to finish describing the dream, I aint got time for no more, this hesitancy shows that he has obvious doubt in fulfilling it due to the current circumstances he and Lennie is in. However, in chapter 3, when Candy offers his savings into the purchasing of the house, George becomes excited as he believes the dream is now within reach. Steinbeck shows this through the use of short sentences and informal dialect, Jesus Christ! I bet we could swing her, because we relate excitement with uncontrollable language, colloquialism and the inability to produce sophisticated sentences, therefore it creates authenticity and pace for the reader, thus making it more believable. Lastly, in chapter 6, the dream is again repeated, back where the story first began. Yet now, the dream is fragmented, separated with the use of ellipses, Youan me. This punctuational technique symbolizes the loss and feebleness of the dream, as well as Georges despair of having to kill Lennie to save him from the oncoming lynch mob. Now, its no longer a chore for George; he wants to take it slow and let Lennie enjoy it fully before he dies, it truly reflects that George needs Lennie just as much as he needs him. Overall the reader would sympathize for both of them, because we can understand that George only did this for Lennies benefit, and despite their disputes; they cared about each other very much. The plot in Of Mice And Men is also an example of a circular narrative; it concludes in the same location, and George and Lennie are once again fleeing from trouble. This structure is used to offer a valuable moral about difficult the American Dream is to fulfill, as well as to reveal the sad absurdity of dreams in general. Overall this highlights Steinbecks pessimistic views towards the dream as he adapts his story to portray the dream to be impossible for all, Curleys wife included. However, on the other hand, Lennies death was inevitable because of the escalating destruction he was evoking, so others could interpret it as a blessing that Lennie died at the hands of a man he trusts, painlessly and still believing in his dream. So readers may believe Steinbeck wrote this to emphasize the beauty of friendships and highlight how important it is for mankind to uphold them.

Terrorism and its effects on children Essay - 1292 Words

In this study the question that was being tested was, does terrorism affect the way that school-age children identify the facial expressions that are being displayed by those around them. The variable in this experiment was whether or not the participant had been through a specific terrorist attack. The working hypothesis was that children who went through a traumatic experience, such as a terrorist attack, would be unable to identify various expressions of facial emotion. The introduction to this experiment was very intriguing. â€Å"On September 1, 2004, armed multinational terrorists (Chechens, Ingush) took hostage about 1,200 children and adults in School Number 1 in the Russian town of Beslan (Republic of North Ossetia-Alania). There have not, though, been any studies done on the ability of a child to recognize the facial expressions after a terrorism-induced trauma. The subjects were 101 children who were there the day the school was under siege and 102 children who were not there due to absence or tardiness. The groups were from the same area, had similar backgrounds, and there was no discernible difference between the two groups. The procedures used were very complex and quite simple at the same time. Children were recruited for this particular study 20 months after the school hostage situation. The trials took one month to complete. There were trained and certified psychologists and professional translators on staff at all times. Everyone at the school who needed to be was notified and gave consent. The parents also gave consent for their children to take part in the study. There were three trials that were given to each participant. Before these trials began the experimenter asked questions that got the participants involved with the thought of emotions and feelings.
